Description of Korakonisi Isle

Zakynthos is a vast, open geological museum, full of impressive rock formations. The steep cliff of Navagio bay mayby is the most famous of those formations but the island is full of such hidden corners of wild beauty, like Korakonisi, at island' s southeastern coast.

You will locate it right after passing the semi-mountainous village of Kiliomenos, following the road signs; a high, steep rock towering almost cut from the main coast, with two small rocky “pools” full os crystal clear sea water in between.

They say that Korakonisi, which means “Crows Island”, took its name because of the numerous crows that used to nest and live on this wild rock. Today Korakonisi is full of visitors that walk down to the base of the rock, through a narrow, protected path from the main coast, to reach to the bottom and dive to the green-blue sea water or enjoy scuba diving and snorkeling.

The most impressive formation of Korakonisi is its rocky arch of more than 20 metres high. Wearing proper shoes you can climb up the arch and also at the top of Korakonisi itself and reach the wooden observatory to watch the endless sea, a breathtaking view!

Yet, Korakonisi is not a famous spot in Zakynthos only for the unforgettable experience of swimming in its crystal clear sea. It is also one of the most famed spots for watching the sunset, with the sun painting the sea and the whole horizon with crimson red colour. This unparalleled view is also well

enjoyed, moment by moment, at the main coast's top and the wooden cantine' s balkony where you can see not only the sun dipping down the Ionian Sea but also Korakonisi itself getting milder under the warm sunset light.

Korakonisi is a year round destination. Although visitors prefer it during summer time for unforgettable swimming, its imposing, wild beauty is priceless even in winter time, when the only sound reaching your ears will be the ones of wind, and of the sea smashing on the rocks!
